2014 in Review

I love this time of the year! Looking through old posts and reflecting on the previous year. Looking forward the the excitement of the new year and all the possibilities that await me.

Before I share my goals for 2015, let's check in on how I did with my 2014 goals.

Individual Goals

I had 3. ONLY THREE! And, I didn't manage to do any of them very successfully.

1) Run Faster. Stuck to endurance. Again. This is a failed goal two years running now. Will I do any better in 2015? Spoiler alert: Yes, this one is making the 2015 goal list. 3rd times a charm, right?

2) Train Harder. I'm not saying that focusing on running is necessarily easy, but it's definitely not harder. Focusing primarily on just one activity doesn't really push me the way I think I should be pushing myself. Please, please don't take any offense to this!

3) Blog Smarter. Yeah, remember that blogging hiatus I went on? Pretty much made a failure out of this goal.

But it's all good. This isn't going to be a total bummer of a post! There were still some other goals, too.

Goals with Jeff

Complete a triathlon. Um. Yeah. We put the kebash on this goal back in August.

Read 3 books together. We kept putting this off and putting this off. We actually did start reading one book, but didn't even finish it. Ugh.

Do at least 1 NEW thing a month. Finally some good news! This is one goal we actually accomplished! Whoo hoo!!!

March - Tried a new restaurant (Stewart & Ogden)
June - Tried a new restaurant (I Love Burgers)
August - Ran a midnight half marathon (Jeff's 1st HM)
Sept - Did a 30-mile bike race/run ride
Oct - Attended a 1st time home buyers class
Nov - Visited the Las Vegas Natural History Museum
Dec - Tried a new restaurant (Envy Steakhouse)

Complete a checklist of enriching activities. Another job well done! Whoo hoo!!

Cultural Activities
A friend's art show
Las Vegas Natural History Museum
Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo
Volunteering
Ironman
New Restaurants
Marathon Training/Support

Man, there were a LOT of activities that I never ended up blogging about. Maybe I'll still do some write-ups about a few of these in 2015. :)

Even though I failed on most of my goals for 2014, it was still an amazing year filled with lots of fun times.

If you're interested in reading more of my adventures in 2014, here are links to my monthly recaps and a few highlights.

2014 Goal Check-in

With a nearly 3 month blogging hiatus, I'm sure you've been wondering how I've been doing with my 2014 goals. :)

There's only 1 more month left, so let's see if I'm still on track!

Individual Goals

Fitness goals - Run Faster and Train Harder
Sept, Oct, and Nov were spent hard at marathon training. Unfortunately, that didn't really include much speed work, cross training, or strength training. Even though I know it should have! It's so hard to find the time to do all of that along with all. the. running. I had a great marathon, though, so NO REGRETS! :)

Blogging goals
Um. You all know how this went. #fail

Goals with Jeff

Read 3 books together. Good news: We actually did start reading together! Yay!! Bad news: We haven't even finished 1 book, let alone 3. Not sure we'll be able to finish 3 before the end of December, but we should make it a priority and still try, right?!

New in 2014. Still going strong doing one new thing every month. Here's what you may have missed:

Sept - Jeff came out with me on a training run. He supported me while biking as I ran.
Oct - We attended a 1st time homebuyers class. :)
Nov - We visited the Las Vegas Natural History Museum

New in 2014 | Enjoying the Course

Enriching Activities. Since August, we've checked off a couple more activities. We volunteered at the Ironman in early Oct, and visiting the Las Vegas Natural History Museum yesterday counts as a cultural activity as well. Now, we have just 3 more activities to check off, and I'm pretty confident that we'll get this all done! Whoo hoo!!!

2014 Enriching Activities | Enjoying the Course

Overall I'm very happy with how my 2014 goals are going, and I hope to finish the year strong! :)

Anyone else still focused on their 2014 goals?
Anyone start working on their 2015 goals already? I've already got some goals bopping around in my head for 2015 that I'm pretty excited about, so stay tuned!

August in Review

Happy Labor Day!! Hope everyone is enjoying the extra long weekend. I know I enjoyed sleeping in late and lounging around this morning!

Let's talk about August. IT WAS AMAZING!!! Seriously, so many fun things happened in August. It was my birthday month, after all.

Biggest highlight: Jeff and I ran a half marathon together. It was my birthday, and his first half marathon.

I got to meet-up with Katie from Twitter and ChaseThisSkirt for a #LadiesBeLike tweet-up at the Palms. She dropped off the fun alien green skirt and headband that I wore for the ET Half Marathon. So fun to meet up with her.

Jeff and I also got all dressed up to go to a friend's art show.

We had a pool day with some friends and my nephew and his girlfriend (and one of their friends), who were visiting from MN for the weekend.

I ramped up my running to officially start marathon training for Rock 'n Roll Vegas in November.

I've been slacking on my yoga, but I did create an easy yoga sequence to do in the morning - even before crawling out of bed.

I shared 5 lessons from Running that I haven't learned.

Jeff and I finally went for a couple bike rides to prepare for Ventura Marathon weekend, where we'll be biking 30-miles on Saturday, and I'll be running a half marathon on Sunday. Can't wait!!

Overall, it was a pretty winning month. In addition to all of the above, I also won two $25 GC to Starbucks in a couple of random drawings at work, a super cute Uberfit tank from This Mama Runs for Cupcakes, AND entry to Long Beach Marathon (or half... I still haven't decided) from Fitness Fatale.

Perfect for my birthday month, right?

Let's check in on my 2014 goals.

Individual Goals

Fitness goals - Run Faster and Train Harder
After my July fitness challenges ended in early Aug, my train harder kind of stopped - unless you include the ramp-up of running mileage. I have been good about getting in some speed work, so there's that. The heat is still kind of killing me, but fall is right around the corner. Even though it's still been triple digits here. I mean Starbucks released the Pumpkin Spice Latte, which means fall, right?!

Blogging goals
I like blogging, but it's a little difficult to see my numbers drop every month. :-( At least my social following has been growing, so there's that... Now, how to get them to pop over and read my blog, too. lol.
  • Monday Listicles? Rumor has it this will start up again in September, so maybe next week...?
  • Fitness Friday posts? I think I posted once on a Friday, but linked up a couple more times.
  • What's for Dinner/Week-in-Review posts? With all the craziness of the month, my weekends have been busy, and I *may* have missed a week.

Goals with Jeff

Run a Triathlon. We've decided to push this back to 2015. It's just not the right time for us with me training for a marathon and other things going on.

Read 3 books together. Maybe in September. :)

New in 2014. Have I mentioned we ran a half marathon together? :-) It wasn't my first, but it was his. Plus it was definitely our first together.

New in 2014 | Enjoying the Course

Enriching Activities. We knocked off a cultural activity (our friend's art show) plus we found a great (new to us) biking/running trail. We'll be doing a lot more bike rides and running on this trail for sure!

July in Review

What? It's already August 4th? I feel like this month is going to be over in the blink of an eye! Lots of fun things coming up this month, but this post is about July.

I fully intended on posting a recap on 7/31, but all of a sudden last week was over. CRAZY!

Let's start with a few highlights from July.

I created a delicious fruit dip!

Creamy Peanut Butter Vanilla Fruit Dip | enjoyingthecourse.com

I did a few fitness challenges (almost).

#30dayfitness Little Black Dress challenge. I made it about 20 or so days until the number of burpees was just too much.

#30dayfitness Abs challenge. I've got a few more days left, but I saw great improvements in July with this challenge!

And of course my running and yoga challenge! There's less than a week left, so you should sign up today to be entered to win some fun prizes!

My birthday streak is almost over!

I've been really good with the #ETCRunStreak part of the challenge, but I've kind of dropped off with the #ETCYogaStreak. I ought to pick that back up for the rest of the streak, BUT it's difficult to find the time with running and the abs challenge.

I created a yoga sequence for runners.

Yoga Flow for Runners

We did our first lake swim at Boulder Beach

Boulder Beach at Lake Mead

We also purchased an Inter-Agency Park Pass, so we're looking forward to many more trips to Lake Mead, Red Rock, and (hopefully) the Grand Canyon.

I became an ambassador for Cocogo! Love this stuff! You can get 40% off your order by entering ENJOYINGTHECOURSE at checkout. Can't wait to represent at my next race!!

Drink Cocogo! Real Fruit Hydration

I also got accepted as a Sweat Pink ambassador!

That's a lot of highlights! Guess it was a pretty great month. :)

Time to check in on my 2014 goals.

Individual Goals

Fitness goals - Run Faster and Train Harder
The two #30dayfitness challenges I started in July helped a LOT with the training harder. I just hope I can keep up with it once this abs challenge ends.
Running faster? Nope. Triple digit heat + streaking = No speed work.

Blogging goals
To be honest, I didn't really put in as much effort with promoting my blog in July as I did in June, and my page views dropped by about 250 - which is kind of a lot when you consider how few they are to begin with. :) Hope to be better about this in Aug! I did gain about 130 Twitter followers, so that's pretty awesome!
  • Monday Listicles? The host has been enjoying her vacation month, so I didn't write a single list in July. Maybe I'll just go rogue while she's still on vacation and do my own lists? Probably not, to be honest.
  • Tuesday's Tips? I've struggled with this one since about Feb or Mar. I think it's time to retire it.
  • Fitness Friday posts? I had some great ideas, but lacked the follow-through. :( I only linked up twice. My birthday party and the Gifts for the party.
  • What's for Dinner/Week-in-Review posts? I didn't miss a single week!

Goals with Jeff

Run a Triathlon. We haven't signed up yet, but we have decided on the Pumpkinman Triathlon at Lake Mead. This is perfect for us because it's close enough that we can drive out to Lake Mead on the weekends to swim the exact course of the race. Real training for this is going to start after the E.T. Full Moon Midnight Half Marathon that we will be running next weekend.

Read 3 books together. Nope. Not yet.

New in 2014. We're going to count our Lake Mead swim as our something New in 2014. This was our first time actually swimming in a lake. We've lounged and played. We've Scuba dived. But we've never actually tried swimming, so there you go.

New in 2014 | Enjoying the Course

Enriching Activities. No updates on this in July, but we did make some plans for what to do for the rest of year.

June in Review

Happy July!!

Whoa. Typing that I just realized that HALF the year is OVER. How did that happen?! Seems like I'm going to blink, and it will be 2015. There are still quite a few things we want to do this year, so we'll probably need to really start kicking it up a notch.

But not to get down about the things still left to do this year, here are a few highlights from June.

The most exciting thing I did was fly back to MN to surprise my niece at her graduation party. I still can't believe she's 18 already.

Jeff and I went hiking on Mt Charleston,

Hiking Bristlecone Loop | Las Vegas, NV

started training for Jeff's first Half Marathon,

and walked a 5k. The Sprinkler Sprint.

Sprinkler Sprint 2014 | Las Vegas, NV

Oh, yeah, and I announced my birthday celebration challenge. JOIN ME!!

#ETCStreaks Birthday Challenge | enjoyingthecourse.com

I also tried iced tea for the first time. And stevia. I'm sold on both.
And the winner of the Summer Fit Kit giveaway is ... Jill Conyers!

So. Yeah. It was a pretty fantastic month!!

Halfway through the year? Let's check in on those 2014 goals.

Individual Goals

Fitness goals - Run Faster and Train Harder
It was a pretty good month for training harder, but not so much with the running faster. It's been H-O-T here! Plus Jeff and I started training for the half together, and since it's his first half, there really hasn't been much time for speed work.

Blogging goals
I'm happy to report that after quite a bit of work in June, I saw growth across all my social channels and with my blog readership. Yay!

Goals with Jeff

Run a Triathlon. Still haven't signed up for anything, but we have started swimming a bit as cross training for our half marathon plan.

Read 3 books together. I'm thinking this is going to be a wintertime thing. Or maybe fall.

New in 2014. We tried a new (to us) restaurant. I Love Burgers. It was delicious!

Enriching Activities. We checked off another Outdoor Activity this month when we went hiking Bristlecone Loop.

May in Review

I think that May might have gone even faster than April! CRAZY!

Here are a few highlights.

We started the month by running/walking a 5k. Race for the Cure.

Race for the Cure 2014 | Las Vegas, NV

We spent the next weekend on Catalina Island for my cousin's wedding. We also went SCUBA diving in the ocean before the wedding and I went for a run the next day.

I also did some sun salutations on the beach, which I didn't really blog about but had a great time doing.

Yoga on the Beach | Catalina Island, CA

We took a weekend off the 3rd weekend, but then I ran a half marathon and a 5k the 4th weekend. It was a gorgeous day for a race, and I had a great time - despite exacerbating an injury I'd been ignoring.

Trails of Fury | Las Vegas, NV

I also had a great time participating in Namaste in May with Fitfluential and MPG Sports. There was a different yoga pose challenge each day, and I did a version of each pose - missing only a few. Yay!

Now let me check in with the old 2014 goals.

Individual Goals

Fitness goals - Run Faster and Train Harder
Can't say I really devoted anytime to this in May. :( I think I may have had one speed training session. Boo. Overall my training wasn't as good as it should have been, but there's always next month. LOL.

Blogging goals
Blogging in May definitely could have been better. I checked in with my Google Analytics this morning only to find out that my pageviews had dropped significantly. Guess I have some work to do to build things back up again.

Goals with Jeff

Run a Triathlon. No news on this yet. Well, except the we've decided against running the Solana Beach Triathlon. There were a lot of reasons why we decided not to do this one, but the ocean swim was definitely a big one.

Read 3 books together. Maybe in June...?

New in 2014. SCUBA diving in the ocean!

Enriching Activities. Nothing in May, but I think we're still good on this. :)

April in Review

Before I check in with my 2014 goals, here are a few highlights from April. We crammed a whole lot of fun into one month. :)

We started the month out by attending our neighbor's wedding at the Aria. We were the only two guests, but it was a blast!

The Aria | Sushi Kaya

I attended a group run to kick off the Rock 'n Roll Marathon in Nov. #LVKickOffNight

Jeff and I got a somewhat disappointing couple's massage.

We volunteered at GreenFEST.

I ran the Mustang 50th half marathon and met up with some fun Twitter friends.

Mustang 50th Half Marathon

I ran 2/3 of Ragnar Trail Zion before it got canceled due to the weather. I still need to write a recap, but it was a blast hanging out with the team - especially since we happened to have a cabin. :) We've all decided to redeem ourselves next year. :) I can't wait!

Ragnar Trail Zion, Zion Ponderosa Ranch

On the way home, George, Rochelle, and I stopped a few places in Zion National Park and had some fun stopping at Fort Zion Trading Post.

Zion National Park | Fort Zion Trading Post

Like I said, April was a ton of fun! And you know what they say about time when you're having fun! IT REALLY FLIES! I can hardly believe that tomorrow is already May! Lots more fun to come in May, too. :)

Around Vegas...

April is off to a great start! No waiting until the last day to check off some of our 2014 goals. :)

On April 1st, we attended our neighbor's wedding. It was a fun little wedding at The Aria. That, in itself, could probably count as something New in 2014 (our first Vegas wedding), but after the wedding, we went to Kaya Sushi to check off our 2nd New Restaurant instead.

If you like all-you-can-eat sushi, this is the place for you!

Of course, if you know Jeff and me at all, you know we don't like fish or seafood, so sushi isn't exactly on the top of our list.

Instead, we ordered a few non-sushi items, like lettuce wraps.

Sushi Kaya Vegas

Which still had fish or something in them, but I mustered my way through.

We also had a beef bowl (Jeff), teriyaki chicken (me) and bacon wrapped asparagus (Jeff). The food was pretty good (for us non-seafood/fish lovers).

I can't forget to mention the Strawberry Soju. I'm still not sure what it was - other than delicious!

Sushi Kaya Vegas

We were in our own private room for the wedding party, but I got to check out the rest of the restaurant when I went to the bathroom. It was super cute and cozy looking! Almost made me wish I loved sushi because the restaurant just had a feel to it that made me want to come back again and again.

On April 4th, we headed to Ageless Ascension Day Spa. We'd bought a Groupon back in January, and thought this would be the perfect time to redeem.

Now, we've definitely had massages before, but this was our first time ever getting a couples massage.

Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed. Boooo.

We arrived 15+ minutes early for our appointment, and then had to wait for 30+ minutes after our appt time for anyone to come and get us. They did put us in a little waiting area, and that would have been fine for 10-15 minutes. But after 45+ minutes it was just annoying and kind of soured us to the whole experience.

The room was set-up nicely, and the massage therapists were nice enough, but the massages weren't nearly as good as we'd had in the past. :(

I guess not everything we try in 2014 will be winners.

We might try another couples massage, but we'd definitely want to check out a different spa.

Do you like sushi?
Ever had a couples massage?

Stewart & Ogden at the Downtown Grand

If you read this post, you might remember just how fast March flew by! Suddenly, it was the end of the month, and Jeff and I hadn't done anything new!

The easiest solution would be to check out a new restaurant. It would not only count for something New in 2014...

Enjoying the Course | New in 2014

But also checks off a new restaurant (our goal is at least 3 this year).

Enjoying the Course | Enriching Activities

So, on 3/31 (nothing like last minute) I jumped on Yelp and searched for nearby Hot New Businesses. Stewart & Ogden in the new Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino sounded perfect!

Let's Go Fly a Kite!

I can't believe it's taken me so long to write this post about our little adventure.

Did you know that Feb 8th was National Kite Flying Day? I had no idea! But I decided it would be a perfect opportunity to try something New in 2014 and bonus that it could also count as checking off one of our outdoor activities for the year, too!

I've never been kite flying. I can't really ever remember going as a kid - and definitely never as an adult, so we ordered a kite from Amazon and eagerly awaited it's arrival.

I'd read that Ivanapah Dry Lake was one of the best places to go kite flying in the country, and it was just over in Primm - less than an hour away. So, we grabbed a few snacks and headed out for a kite flying adventure.

Driving with a Dog
Sallie is the most comfortable when sitting on the driver's lap.

Primm, NV, is barely a town. It's more like a couple of casinos and an outlet mall right on the border of NV and CA. There was no official entrance to get to the Dry Lake - just a little break in a fence. No sign. Nothing to indicate that we were there. There happened to be a security guard in the parking lot of Whiskey Pete's, and he told us that he sees lots of people entering through that break in the fence. So weird!

But once we were inside, there were definitely Bureau of Land Management signs, so we knew we were in the right place.

Putting the kite together is a bit more complicated than I expected, but it's a breeze once you've done it a couple times.

Kite Flying Las Vegas Nevada

Unfortunately, Mother Nature apparently didn't get the memo that it was National Kite Flying Day. THERE WAS PRACTICALLY NO WIND! Which is obviously something very important when it comes to flying a kite.

We were able to get it airborne a couple times.

Kite Flying Ivanapah Dry Lake

And had a total blast running around and trying to fly our new kite.

Sallie did not agree. Twice she ran back to the car to escape the huge flying creature in the sky that kept dive bombing. It hadn't really occurred to us how the kite would be perceived by her.

She sought the safety of the car and even jumped inside for protection!

Scion iQ and Border Terrier
She's all smiles now that she's in the safety of the driver's seat.

Here's a little video I shot of our adventure.

And here's a little Auto Awesome video that Google put together for us. Gotta love Google! :)

We felt kind of bad about freaking out Sallie so much, but we had a total blast! We definitely hope to do it again, but we'll leave her at home next time. And make a day out of it by checking out the rest of Primm (i.e. the roller coaster at Buffalo Bill's).

Have you ever gone kite flying?

Three Things Thursday 2/6

This week seems to really be flying by! I can hardly believe it's already Thursday. Yay!! Almost Friday. :-)

I've got a few exciting things to share!

1. I ran the first race for this round of #5bythe5th virtual race series and GOT A PR! I waited until the 5th to run it because I had a tempo run on schedule for the 5th and thought that would be perfect! Turns out it was! It was only in the 40s, so I wore my new Crazy Compression sleeves and a LS shirt. I was still cold, but I think that made me run a bit faster. I was listening to one of my favorite Rock My Run mixes - Grrl Power. I tried to use the music to push me faster instead of just singing along. Whenever I was tempted to sing, I thought, If you can sing, you can run faster. So instead of singing, I'd run faster.

Here are the numbers:
Total Time27:04
Avg Pace8:49 min/mile
Mile 18:38 min
Mile 28:45 min
Mile 38:41 min
3.1:59 min

I was pleasantly surprised - not only with the PR, but with actually pushing myself to run a tempo run. This is probably one of the few races I feel like I actually raced. With a goal of getting a sub-25:00 5k, I need to keep up with the tempo runs (and other speed work), but I feel like I'm heading in the right direction.

2. Don't forget that tomorrow is National Wear Red Day! Katie at From Ice Cream to Marathon and I are co-hosting a little linky party to celebrate - Wear Red Selfies. Be sure and stop back by tomorrow to share your selfie and why you're wearing red. For more information on heart disease and National Wear Red Day, visit goredforwomen.org.

Feel free to snag this little button for your post.

Wear Red Selfies

If you're not a blogger and still want to link up with us, you can still link up. I'll tell you how in tomorrow's post.

3. Jeff and I have some exciting plans for this weekend! I posted a teaser pic on Instagram last night. Can you guess what we'll be doing? Hint: I has nothing to do with the bikes in the background of the picture.

What's exciting you today?

Top of the World

Ok. Maybe not.

But the Stratosphere is the tallest building in the Vegas area and offers the best views of the city, so when I heard that locals could go to the observation deck for free in January, I simply knew that should be our first new in 2014 thing to do.

We've been to observation decks before, but never to the Stratosphere, so one Friday after work and dinner, we decided to be tourists in our own city and go check it out.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

To save gas, and since it was only 2+ miles away and a nice night, we decided to walk. We had so much fun just walking together! That would have been a great night on its own. Of course the socks and sneakers I was wearing didn't have the same plan. I may have even gotten a blister. :(

Getting closer!

Stratosphere Las Vegas

We got there just in time. The line was long, but really swelled just after we arrived. Yay for beating the 9:30pm rush. :)

We had to wait in line to get tickets. Then you go up stairs and wait in line to go through a security check. More stairs to get to another line to wait for an elevator to take you to the 108th floor. That's a lot of lines!

The waiting really wasn't so bad; it actually went pretty quickly.

The view made it all worth it.

Here you can see Paradise (where we live) on the left and The Strip on the right.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

Here I am being silly over downtown.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

The lights were crazy! There were SO many!! But it was super fun to see where they dead-ended at the mountains. Only at night, you couldn't really tell there were mountains there at all.

It was a very fun date night!

But it wasn't enough for me. I wanted to see it during the day. I couldn't convince Jeff to go twice in one weekend. He's thinks its more spectacular at night, plus he wants to do the extreme rides next time we go.

I really wanted to see it during the day when it was still free, so I incorporated a trip back to the top during my Sunday run.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

It was a bit more crowded - both the lines and the observation deck. I headed out much later in the afternoon than I'd intended, so I got there as the sun was just starting to set.  It was actually very pretty with the angle of the sun where it was.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

Was it more spectacular at night? I'm not convinced. I do love the night lights, but I also love the mountains and the wispy clouds.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

Here is Paradise and The Strip again, but during the day.

Stratosphere Las Vegas

What do you think? Would you rather visit during the day or at night?
