Happy National Iced Tea Month

I can't believe how quickly June has gone by! I'm a little late to the party, but did you know that June is National Iced Tea Month?

I had no idea until I received a Summer Fit Kit complimentary from Pure Via as a FitFluential ambassador.
In fact, I'd never even tried iced tea before! Crazy, I know. :)

I've been having some fun testing out Pure Via stevia sweetener. In tea. In coffee. In whatever. It's good.

Pure Via comes in either packets or liquid. Both are an all natural alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners. The packets are also non-GMO (the liquid isn't), which is just one more plus in my book.

The liquid comes in two flavors - original and vanilla. Both are delicious, but the vanilla is my favorite. I made a papaya sweet tea with the vanilla, and it was perfection!

One packet of Pure Via equals about 2 teaspoons of sugar and one squeeze of the liquid is about 1 teaspoon of sugar.

What I loved most about both the packets and liquid was the clean, sweet taste! No weird flavor like with some other sweeteners I've tried, and I dare say I might even like it better than regular sugar.

Maybe you'd like to give it a try, too! Pure Via was generous enough to offer one of my readers a Summer Fit Kit - just like the one I received.

Ready for the Weekend!

Happy Friday!! Even though it was a short week with Monday being a holiday, I'm more than ready for the WEEKEND!

Ready for the Weekend!

We ordered Bountiful Baskets to pick up this weekend. Yay for fresh produce! I usually drive to pick it up, but we're hoping to hop on our bikes tomorrow morning. We biked to pick up our basket the very first week we participated, and NEVER AGAIN! Oops! That was more than a year ago. Wow!

Speaking of biking, we really need to get back in the saddle. :) We're still hoping to get in our first triathlon this year. Even though, we'll be doing a sprint distance, and we certainly won't be racing, we still need to get used to being back on the bike. We still haven't decided on a specific triathlon. We were thinking about doing the Solana Beach Triathlon in July, but we've decided against that one. I'm still feeling a bit of twinging pain in my butt, and I'm not sure if I'll be ready for that kind of race in just two months. Plus, I'm a bit nervous about doing a tri in the ocean - without living near enough one to practice. :)

In the meantime, I just need to get on my bike MORE! I think I've only biked to work ONCE in the past SEVERAL months. Yikes! I used to be so good about it. Now, I always seem to have one excuse or another or I simply didn't prepare the night before.

In addition to biking to Bountiful Baskets tomorrow, We're also hoping to join a few friends for a trail run/hike Sunday morning! Yay for active weekends. :) I hope I feel good enough after tomorrow's bike ride to head up to Mt Charleston on Sunday. I just want this pain to go away! I know I need to do a little more research on some good stretches and strengthening moves to heal properly. And give it some time.

Now, I've got to get a move on, but here's a random conversation I had with a co-worker earlier this week.

HIM: So, how many marathons did you run this weekend?
ME (being a smart-ass): None.
HIM (looking perplexed): Oh, you took the weekend off?
ME (laughing a little): Not really. I just didn't run any marathons. I only ran a half Saturday morning and a 5k Saturday night.
HIM (looking impressed): Wow. I don't know how you do it.

I love conversations like that! One of the best parts of being a runner is the bragging rights! lol.

What are your weekend plans? Anyone racing?
Do you run for the bragging rights? Or is that just me?

#LVKickOffNight 5k recap

TGIF, my friends! Actually, this week really seemed to fly by! I could hardly believe that yesterday was Thursday, and now it's Friday already. Woot woot!!

Wednesday night after work, I headed straight to Red Rock Running Company for the #LVKickOffNight 5k fun run. I arrived just in time for the group to be heading out of the store. :)

I met up with George, and we were off!

The guy leading the group started out with a much faster pace than I'd expected, but I did my best to keep up with the group. Every time I glanced down at my watch and saw sub-9:00 paces, I couldn't help but smile just a little. Turns out this was going to be a tempo run.

March will be EPIC!

Ok. Maybe not epic, but it's definitely off to a STRONG start! I woke up early this morning to pick up some produce and bread from Bountiful Baskets and head straight to a fitness class at Unleashed Body & Mind.

Unleashed Body & Mind, Vegas

The class was a freebie as part of #YelpsFitClub going on in Vegas in March. The class may have been free, but it was definitely a killer.

With jello legs, I headed straight home, soaked in the hot tub, watched a movie, and took a nap. Yeah. I totally skipped my run, but I'll just go tomorrow instead. :)

Here are a couple of photos from after the class.

Unleashed Body & Mind, Vegas
All sweaty after class

Circuit training at Unleashed Body & Mind, Vegas
A general idea of what we did in class

And a short peek at the studio. It looks pretty well equipped for any kind of class or to work out on your own.

You can read my full review of Unleashed over on Yelp, but I really enjoyed the class, the instructor, and the studio in general. I'd definitely recommend it and hope to go again sometime.

This morning, I did have a friend from work join me, which probably made the class even better! It was loads of fun to have her at the class, and next Saturday, we'll be doing a class at SurfSet, which seems fun but INTENSE as well. Can't wait!

How did you kick off March?

Koss FitSeries - The Perfect Gift for Active Women

This post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Koss.

Less than 10 days until Christmas. Is your shopping done? No?

Are you still looking for that perfect gift for yourself the active woman in your life? I recently had the opportunity to try out the new Koss FitSeries headphones as a FitFluential ambassador. They come in two styles - FitBuds and FitClips.

Koss headphones

Personally, I preferred the FitClips. They fit easily around my ear, and I barely noticed them during my 5-mile run. I meant to try them out during my marathon, but ended up not listening to any music with headphones.

Unfortunately, I had some difficulty with the FitBuds. The left one always seemed to pop-out. Could have been user error.

I'm not really much of a headphone aficionado. I usually just use whatever comes with my phone. :-) That said, I really thought the sound quality was good. I didn't have to turn the volume up nearly as high as with my other ear buds. Score!

Koss FitClips

Both styles of headphones come with 3 different sizes of cushioning, so you can customize the fit to your ear.

Koss FitSeries Headphones
See the difference in sizes of the two headphones without the cushioning? I think is this partially why I liked the FitClips better. So much smaller. :)

They're designed by women, specifically for women.
The FitBuds are 33% smaller than other Koss earbuds.

They're sweat resistant and come in a variety of colors.

Koss FitSeries Headphones

But the best part is that they are totally affordable! Normally $29.99, they're on sale at several retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, Walgreens, Kmart and Sears for $19.99. Or less!!

Sounds like a pretty great deal to me!

Friday's Favorite!

Isn't this how we all wish we looked after every run? With a huge smile on our faces?

This was a great run - in part due to my new YMX by Yellowman top. As part of my ambassadorship with FitFluential, I was shipped two tops to try - and they quickly became my favorites.

I'd heard that their tops tend to run a bit small, so I ordered a large I normally buy medium, and these were perfect!

I love the super long length!

Makes these tops perfect for almost any sport from running to yoga to biking.

I loved that it didn't ride up at all during my runs, like some of my other tops. And stayed put while on the mat.

The pink top I received even has a pocket in the back.

Perfect for a little fuel. Not so perfect as a pocket for my phone. :( It was a little too bouncy, and I was afraid it would fall out - even though it was quite secure, actually.

I love the super soft, breathable material!

It's MadKool fabric.
Nothing is better than your own skin. It breathes, it shines, and it feels. MadKool® fabric is designed to do the same.
I really did feel like it was part of my skin. It certainly got as wet and sweaty as my skin did. :) Normally, I can't run long distances in sleeveless tops without the inside of my upper arms chafing, but no chafing with these tank tops!! Definitely a HUGE plus in my book. Oh, AND, these can be thrown in the washer and dryer. Just don't use fabric softener. :)

I love the super fun designs!

Most of my other tops are plain and boring or race shirts, so these were definitely a fun addition. I even worn the blue top out on a date night.

And eventually, it will be worn to work.

These tops retail at $69, but I think they're totally worth the price. They are so versatile! They are so fun! They are so comfortable!

They are definitely this Friday's Favorite!!

What's your Friday Favorite?

How about a little Sustained Energy?

I did a pretty fun stairs workout this morning.

Vegas Stairs Workout

It was AWESOME! But it wiped me out. Time to recover and restore some of that energy.

Designer Whey smoothie

Designer Whey has come out with a new addition to their line of protein powders - Sustained Energy. You may have seen an ad for it in the June issue of Shape magazine.

Designer Whey

As a FitFluential ambassador, I was given the opportunity to take this protein powder for a test drive. Perfect timing for me as I received a canister of both the Vanilla Bean and the Chocolate Velvet right at the beginning of marathon training.

Delicious for recovery. On mornings like today.

Or just to wake up in the morning. For those days, when the snooze button wins.

For whatever reason, it's the perfect addition to my random morning smoothie. I say random because, I rarely follow a recipe. I generally start with some almond milk, orange juice, and then add whatever fruit I might have on hand. Sometimes spinach, if I have any.

Adding a scoop of Designer Whey Sustained Energy powder adds just a little more oomph.

What makes it so good?

From their website...
Designer Whey® Sustained Energy™ is specifically formulated with our proprietary Endurance Blend™. Designed to give you balanced, stimulant-free, sustained energy through fast absorbing whey protein and slower absorbing soy and casein proteins, giving you a steady supply of essential amino acids while helping you control hunger with fiber. Packed with 16 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and 19 Essential Vitamins & Minerals and naturally flavored and sweetened – all for only 100-good-for-you calories!
Sounds pretty perfect to me!

New to using protein powder or looking to mix it up with some new recipes? Just check out the Designer Whey recipes tab for lots of great ideas.

This morning, I tried this Tropical Tone-Up smoothie, as featured in Shape. Of course, I'm not sure how it's possible to make a smoothie with only 1/2 cup of milk, so I doubled it for mine.

I mostly stick to smoothies (boring, I know), but I also experimented a bit by adding some protein powder to my favorite banana cookie bars and even a batch a brownies. The extra protein helped to satisfy that sweet tooth without getting carried away feeling too guilty.

Protein Brownies Designer Whey

Designer Whey sure is excited about the launch of Sustained Energy! So excited, in fact, that they're offering to give 6 of you a canister to try for yourself. Yes, SIX of you will get to try either the Vanilla Bean or Chocolate Velvet.

Check out the Rafflecopter for your chances to win.

Review of ... Kona Kase

Being an ambassador for FitFluential has some sweet perks. Like trying out Kona Kase.

Performance. Fueled. Monthly.

I think monthly boxes similar to Kona Kase are all the rage right now. There are boxes for women. Boxes for men. Boxes for pets. Boxes with clothes. Boxes with food.

They're all over the place, but what I love about Kona Kase is that it offers fuel for my active lifestyle. I don't know about you, but I can get pretty overwhelmed when trying to decide what kind of fuel to try for my long runs or recovery from my long runs or simply snacks for that late afternoon craving.

And sometimes I get bored with the same old thing and like to mix it up, but don't know what to try next or where to find it.

Kona Kase makes it simple to try new products that you may never have heard of or weren't willing to try on your own.

Here is a picture of what I got in my June Box.

More than just fuel for your body, each box also comes with an inspirational quote. Fuel for your mind. :)

As well as a little blurb about each product and maybe a training tip on how to get the most out of the delectable little treat. Sometimes, you might even get a little discount code off your purchase of more. Can't beat that!

The little card that describes all the products also has a little spot on it for you to give it a grade from 1-5. If you're like me, you might forget if you don't write it down. Ha!

There are still a couple items that I haven't tried yet, because I'm on a running hiatus, but I loved nearly every item I've tried. The Half Pops were particularly satisfying. They're like popcorn that hasn't quite popped all the way, and seasoned deliciously. Only problem was that one bag was supposed to be 2 servings. Oops!

Add to all of these are the two guys behind Kona Kase - Taylor and John. They're regular athletes just like us who wanted to help make it easier to discover these great, lesser-known brands and breath some life into our fuel - instead of relying on our boring old energy bars. These guys are also super focused on customer service. They're quick to respond to any questions you may have, and they just seem like a couple of fun guys.

A monthly subscription starts at just $15, or you could get a discount by signing up for 3, 6, or 12 months. Either way, you can cancel at anytime if you're not satisfied, but I don't see how that's possible. :)

So, are you ready to try Kona Kase? If you're not quite sure, here's a little discount code that might help you say YES! Just enter FFJuly to receive $5 off month one.

Thank you, FitFluential and KonaKase!

Have you tried Kona Kase?
If so, what's been your favorite new product?
What other subscription boxes have you tried (or heard of)?

The Light. The Bright. The Fabulous. #WaveSayonara

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Mizuno.

I was beyond thrilled to be selected to review a pair of the brand new Wave Sayonaras. My current running shoes are on their last legs. First of all, they are trail shoes. Not exactly the best for this urban runner. Second, I got a small hole in the right shoe during RagnarZion back in April and it keeps growing. :(

Needless to say, I was practically jumping up and down when I got the text saying they were delivered. Of course, I was at work, so I had to keep it together.

When I finally picked up my package, it felt empty. Yeah, that's how light these babies are.

Wave Sayonara

And bright pink.

Definitely my lightest and brightest shoes EVER!

Mizuno boasts them as their lightest everyday training shoe.

Seriously, at only 7.1oz (8.1 for mens) these shoes felt like I was running in nothing.

Whenever I go running shoe shopping, I like to have the experts recommend options for me to try. I'm not usually brand specific, so I tend to try a large variety. Without fail, they usually recommend a motion control shoe, but I tend to gravitate more to the stability/support section of shoes. I always feel like the motion control shoes are too clunky for me. And uncomfortable.

Since the heavier motion control shoes were often what was recommended to me, though I don't think I've ever actually purchased a pair, I was a bit nervous about how the Wave Sayonara would feel on a run. Would they be comfortable? Supportive enough?

I was pleasantly surprised at how fabulous they felt! In fact, my first mile in them scored me a FIFTEEN SECOND PR!

7:44. Woot woot!!

And that was in 80+ degree weather with crampy ickiness. I can only imagine how fast I'll be when the temps cool down again. In a few months.
The euphoric foam midsole ensures the proper cushioning without added weight and bulk so runners experience a light, smooth, comfortable, and responsive 'ride.'

Mizuno definitely hit the jackpot with these shoes!

Jeff commented last night that they feel so light, like they're made of paper. Hard to believe they don't just fall apart with every step, he said.

Well, I can assure you after several runs in these, they are sturdy - despite their lightness.

Here's a quick video from before my run this morning with a couple more thoughts on these fabulous shoes!

THANK YOU, #WaveSayonara, for helping me squeak in with a sub-10:00 pace for my 4-miler this morning - despite the 92° heat!!

Wave Sayonara

If you're looking for a light, bright, fabulous shoe for your next mezamashii run, look no further! These go on sale on 7/5/2013 and retail at $119.99. Find them at mizunorunning.com or your favorite retailer.

What do you think of the Wave Sayonaras?
Tell me about your last brillant run.

FRS - Review + Giveaway

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of FRS.

Does the afternoon ever come around, and you feel yourself drained of energy? FRS to the rescue! I'm not usually a huge fan of energy drinks. They just seem so unnatural, so I was very excited to give FRS a try.

Originally developed as an effective way for chemotherapy patients to have more energy (love this!), it is now used by athletes, nutritionists and anyone wanting the energy for a healthy, active lifestyle.

Don't we all? :-)

FRS is chock full of antioxidants, vitamins, and green tea extracts. One of its main ingredients is quercetin, which can be found in the skins of blueberries, apples, and grapes. Three of my favorite fruits. :) Quercetin has been found to provide sustained energy, increased endurance, and immune system support in multiple clinical trials.

By avoiding lots of caffeine and sugar, FRS helps kick start your body's own energy-producing mechanisms. I'm all for that.

You can find out lots of other great info on their website, but I know what you really want to know... HOW DOES IT TASTE?!

FRS offers a variety of products. I was sent a sample of ready-to-drink beverages, chews, and powdered drink mixes.

I LOVED the powdered drink mix.

I tried the Orange flavor, and it was SO GOOD! Reminded me of Tang®. Drink of Astronauts! Made me feel all powerful and stuff. Bonus that it mixed really well, too. Oh, and it only adds 10 cal to your 8-oz bottle of water. Yum.

Speaking of YUM, the chews were excellent, too.

I tried the Pomegranate Blueberry. Very flavorful and great texture. Think Starburst®. But with lots of healthy vitamins. Whoo hoo!!

Lastly, the ready-to-drink beverages. Honestly, the first couple flavors I tried weren't my cup o' tea. The flavor was ok, but I didn't care for the aftertaste. AND THEN I TRIED the Apricot-Nectarine.

LOVED IT! So tasty. :)

Next time you're feeling that afternoon slump it happens. even to us active, healthy folks. why not give FRS a try? It's available at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, Kroeger, Whole Foods, Rite Aid, Meijer, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, and, of course, FRS.com.

Click here for a downloadable coupon. Whoo hoo!!

FRS has also been so generous as to offer YOU a chance to try out FRS for free. :) Can't beat that, right?

And a few other things on my mind....

1. I'm having fun spending some time over at the What's Beautiful website. There are so many awesomely inspiring, beautiful women out there, and I'm so honored to be a sponsored participant through Fitfluential. If you haven't signed up yet, what are you waiting for? Go here, set a goal, join a team or two, and let's redefine Beauty together. Maybe you'll even win a trip to Costa Rica for yoga and surfing lessons. Wouldn't that be fun?!

2. National Running Day is in less than two weeks. Will you be running? I created an event on my Facebook page. You should totally sign up! It's purely for fun. There aren't any prizes or anything, but hopefully lots of support and inspiration.

3. I ran my fastest mile yesterday (that I can remember at least). Here's what it looked like when I was finished.

I also tried a pull-up. Check out the video on my What's Beautiful profile.

How were your workouts this past week?
What are your plans for the long weekend? I'm picking up my very first Bountiful Basket Saturday morning and going to the Las Vegas 51s baseball game Friday night, but I've got no other plans. Probably a run or two and hopefully lots of time at the pool.

Not that I'm complaining...

As you can see, I'm getting a bit more consistent! Yay!!

Remember last week when I mentioned that the worst section of my bike commute was getting repaved? Well, apparently I was wrong. While the road was closed for repaving, the section that was repaved was not the worst of it. *sigh*

This week, I wasn't feeling well on Tuesday, so I drove to work. On Wednesday, I was going out to dinner with a vendor and some co-workers. Since we were leaving right from work, I chose not to bike. Didn't want to get to the fancy restaurant all sweaty. ;-)

Also, since I was out to dinner until after 9pm last night, we skipped the Sexy for Summer challenge. I marked it as a REST day yesterday, because we decided to just shift the challenge to accommodate.

Fitness Friday - First Week of May

Are you ready for the weekend? I sure am. :) It's been a long week.

DOMS + period + sore throat = Clarinda's down for the count.

I called in sick Wednesday. It was kind of nice to have a mid-week respite, but being sick wasn't so fun. :( Despite being sick, we are still on track for our Sexy for Summer challenge. whoo hoo!

In April, I tried doing a weekly review of my fitness goals, and, unfortunately, I wasn't very consistent. Sometimes, I just have difficulty blogging on Sundays. I want to be outside or lounging and spending time with Jeff.

So, for May, I decided to move my weekly reviews to Fridays. Of course, I didn't decide that until after last Friday, so here's a look at what I've done since May 1st.

Still not perfect, but there are a few less frowny faces out there.

I know, I know.
I didn't commute once this week.
Partly, I was lazy.
Partly, I was sick.
Mostly, the crappiest section of my bike route is being re-paved this week. (yay!) With the re-paving, that section was closed, and I'd be forced to bike on roads with heavier traffic, so for safety sake, I chose to drive.

Any fun weekend plans? I'm doing a Girls Night with a few friends! I've been looking forward to it for a couple weeks now, so tonight can't get here fast enough.

And for fitness? Since I only ran once this week, I'd like to get in some speed work and maybe 9-10 miles. Not sure which to do on which day. What do you suggest?
